What We'll Provide

There are several types of phone services that could be of use, such as VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), and POTS (Plain old telephone service). Here at Business Phone Services, we will go into greater detail about these types of phone services, and a comprehensive list of providers for each of them.

VOIP

VOIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. A general term for a family of transmission technologies for transmission of voice communications over packet-switched IP networks, such as the Internet.

- Pros -

Most likely the biggest advantage of VOIP is cost savings. There are a lot of VOIP services out there, and can save your business money depending on the efficiency of the service. There are some VOIP services that will only allow you to make calls to others who are running VOIP or at least without additional fees.

There are other VOIP services that will allow you to call anyone who has a phone, packaged with their standard fee. Most VOIP service providers who support PC to phone calls charge a small monthly fee for unlimited calls within the United States.

Another advantage of VOIP is portability, as most VOIP service providers have and address already built into your phone, meaning you could essentially take your phone anywhere that has a broadband connection.

- Cons -

VOIP does not guarantee that the sound quality will be decent, as the VOIP will be transmitted over an Internet service, as well as compatibility as VOIP software does not all work on a global scale.

VOIP services calling other VOIP services may not work, and this could cause serious issues for a company as you would want to reach the largest scope of communication possible for customers.

VOIP is also useless during a power outage, as it uses your external power source. A traditional phone can function even during a power outage because the phone company transmits electricity over the phone line. This can be daunting during the case of an emergency.

POTS

POTS which stands for Plain Old Telephone Service is the basic service of residential and small business service connection to the telephone network in most parts of the world.

- Pros -

Unlike VOIP, POTS is virtually universally compatible with any other POTS phone service, and provides greater reliability than any other phone service.

During a blackout, it will still work as a different source of electricity is being sent through the phone line. It is currently the most commonly used phone service.

- Cons -

POTS can be more costly than VOIP, and may lack portability.
